Middle School Summer Reading List-Summer 2018

Summer is a time to relax…with a book! Following are the titles students need to read before the first day of
school. The books have been chosen to correspond with units across the curriculum we will study throughout
the school year. Enjoy them, and read them mindfully!

Incoming 6th Graders – read the following required books:

The PhantomTollbooth by Norton Juster

Incoming 7th Graders – read the following required books:

Charles and Emma: TheDarwin’s Leap of Faith by Deborah Heiligman
Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

 

Incoming 8th Graders – read the following required books:

The Five People You Meetin Heaven by Mitch Albom
TheBoysWho Challenged Hitler by Phillip M. Hoose
March (graphic novels 1-3) by John Lewis

 

For ALL students – choose ONE of the books from your required reading and complete the following:

 

● Redesign the cover of your book – make sure to make it colorful and reflective of the story!

 

Then choose ONE of the following written assignments:

● Write a short story about what the character(s) would be doing one year later.
● Write a letter to the author.
● Write a short book review. Remember to include a few sentences describing the book as well as a few
sentences about why you liked it—or didn’t.
